In April 2017, Garrett Riley attended the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Paralympian Search event in Montreal, that aimed to find potential Paralympians. Thus began his journey to his first Paralympic Games in 2022.

Over the past two seasons Riley has battled injuries but was inserted into the line-up for Canada’s miniseries in late 2021 against the U.S. and South Korea.

After participating in his first world championships in 2019, he underwent surgery in January 2020 on his amputated leg and combined with the pandemic, he didn’t play the entire year.

At age 15, Riley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – the same cancer as Terry Fox. He had a tumour on his left knee and three large black spots on his lungs. They were initially able to save the leg in a 2011 surgery, which left him cancer-free, but complications arose last year due to infection and his left leg was amputated.
