We envision a world where preeclampsia no longer
threatens the lives of mothers and babies.

Mission Statement

To reduce maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy through patient education, public awareness and research.

Symptoms of Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. It is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.

Typically, preeclampsia occurs after 20 weeks gestation (in the late 2nd or 3rd trimesters or middle to late pregnancy) and up to six weeks postpartum (after delivery), though in rare cases it can occur earlier than 20 weeks. Proper prenatal care is essential to diagnose and manage preeclampsia. Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and toxemia are outdated terms for preeclampsia. HELLP syndrome and eclampsia (seizures) are other variants of preeclampsia.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Excess protein in urine
  • Severe headaches
  • Blurred or altered vision
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain on the upper-right side
  • Sudden weight gain and swelling
  • Decreased urination

Volunteer Policy

Vision Grant Award Program

According to the World Health Organization, preeclampsia is one of the least funded areas of research, especially when considered against Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). Preeclampsia Foundation Canada’s Vision Grant Program funds medical research pertaining to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Preeclampsia Foundation Canada, through the generous support of our donors, corporate partnerships, and community events will award one medical research Vision Grant up to $25,000 CAD to study specifically HELLP syndrome. The grant is generously supported from Cara HELLPs research fund established at Preeclampsia Foundation Canada. Our affiliate, Preeclampsia Foundation (U.S.) will award two medical research Vision Grants to study preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, up to $20,000 USD.

It is our hope that successful projects will, in turn, garner additional research support from major funding organizations, earn scientific merit at important meetings, and inspire young investigators to commit their life’s work to this complex field of study.
