Dr. Li’s work in integrated knowledge translation has led to a series of studies that examine the benefits and risks of involving patients as research partners. Findings of these studies have contributed to the development of two products: a conceptual framework for meaningful patient engagement and an outcome measure to evaluate the quality of such engagement.

Dr. Li’s research has been recognized by a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (now Health Research BC) Career Investigator Award (2011-20), and a Canada Research Chair in Patient-oriented Knowledge Translation (2014-24). She was selected for the U.S. Association of Rheumatology Professionals Distinguished Scholar Award (2015) and Distinguished Educator Award (2022). In 2019, she was inducted as Fellow of Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
