About Me

David Shavelle, MD, is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and holds several leadership roles within MemorialCare, including Chief of Cardiology for the health system. In this role, Dr. Shavelle serves as a liaison between Los Angeles’ and Orange County’s medical staffs, hospital administrations, physicians and clinical teams across MemorialCare’s entire footprint – advancing the vision and mission of the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute throughout the health system. In addition, he is the Medical Director of Adult Cardiology and Interventional Lab and Co-Director for the Adult ECMO Program at the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long Beach Medical Center.

He chose medicine as a career because of early childhood memories of his father, who was a nephrologist. He was very influential on him, as one of the first nephrologists in the Long Beach area to establish an outpatient dialysis center. Dr. Shavelle developed a particular interest in cardiology because of the strong basis on physiology and similarities to basic Mechanical Engineering principles, including hemodynamics.

Dr. Shavelle completed college at UC Irvine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering before attending UCLA Medical School. He then completed Internal Medicine Residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. He then worked as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente in Harbor City for one year prior to entering General Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Washington, in Seattle WA. He returned to Los Angeles to complete a one-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Harbor UCLA/Good Samaritan Hospital. He subsequently joined a large private practice Cardiology group at Good Samaritan Hospital, at the same time working at Harbor UCLA in the Division of Cardiology with a faculty appointment at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He then spent the last 11 years at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Among prior leadership positions, he was Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, Director of the General Cardiology Fellowship, Director of Interventional Cardiology and Service Line Director for Cardiology at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. For 11 years, he was Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center and Director of the STEMI Receiving Center Program where USC was consistently ranked among the highest performing hospitals throughout Los Angeles County, receiving commendation from the County Board of Los Angeles in 2017.

He is actively engaged in clinical research and has published approximately 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts.  Dr. Shavelle has received multiple teaching awards including the Golden Apple Award from Keck School of Medicine in 2010 and 2019 and the Faculty teaching award from the Division of Cardiology at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in 2005. In addition, he was recognized as a Top Los Angeles Doctor by the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2021 and 2022.

Dr. Shavelle values long-term relationships, advocating for optimal patient care and allowing patients to participate in state of art cardiovascular research. In his free time, Dr. Shavelle enjoys running, fly fishing and spending time with his wife and three children.
