Taking a self-test

How does it work and
how accurate are its results?

Learn about the INSTI HIV Self Test

I’m Ready. I’m ready to lay my fear to rest. I’m ready to defy stigma. I’m ready to seek advice. I’m ready to know my status. I’m ready to love and be loved.

I’m Ready to Know offers low-barrier options to HIV self-testing and connections to care.

I’m Ready to Know is a national project that is implementing, scaling-up and evaluating low-barrier options for access to HIV self-testing. We want to reach the undiagnosed and give people choices about how to connect to the care they need. Our vision is for everyone in Canada to have access to HIV testing and support.

Our flagship initiative, the I’m Ready program, is distributing 50,000 free HIV self-testing kits across Canada and inviting self-testers to connect to care and to anonymously share their results. We are also working on kiosk kit distribution, test-at-home programs and pharmacist-led connections to care.

The I’m Ready program

Know your status. Connect to care. Together, let’s end HIV in Canada.

Are you ready?

Watch our video to learn about the I’m Ready program.

Our program is sharing free HIV self-testing kits and asking questions from the people who will use them so we can learn how to improve HIV testing and care in Canada.

I’m Ready is a national program to reach the undiagnosed and those at risk of HIV in Canada. If you want to know your status and help our program, just download the I’m Ready, Test app to order up to three free HIV self-testing kits or grab one of our kits at a pickup location near you.

Once you have your kit(s), you can use the app to test on your own and to get more information about HIV care and prevention. You can also book time with a peer navigator through our I’m Ready, Talk secure telehealth service for support with testing and connections to care at any point before, during or after you take the test.

Along the way, you’ll answer survey questions through the I’m Ready, Test app to help improve HIV testing and care in Canada.

Together, we can end HIV in Canada.

Know your status in four easy steps:

The INSTI HIV Self Test Kit:
Test where and when you want to

With the I’m Ready program, you can get up to three free INSTI HIV Self Test kits.

The INSTI HIV Self Test is similar to the rapid point-of-care test approved for use in Canada and is produced by the same manufacturer, bioLytical. It’s similar to other home self-tests, not unlike a pregnancy test: you do the test on yourself and see the result within minutes.

Connect to care with support from I’m Ready, Talk peer navigators, or on your own

Are you self-testing for HIV, or thinking about it? Our peer navigators through the I’m Ready, Talk secure telehealth platform are here for you before, during and after you take the test. They can answer your questions about the I’m Ready program, help you navigate the self-testing process and connect you to resources for HIV care and prevention.

If you prefer to find services and resources on your own, we’ve posted a lot of the same information that our peer navigators reference on this website. For more information, check out our Knowledge base, our Care pathways, and our Pre and post-test counselling pages.

Why are we ready
for HIV self-testing?

Hear from real people across Canada about why they’re ready for HIV self-testing and the difference it can make for reaching the undiagnosed and ending the HIV epidemic in Canada.
