Law Society presents Honorary LLD to Audrey Loeb

At the June 6, 2022, Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto, the Law Society will present a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) to Audrey Loeb, one of the first advocates of condominium law reform.

The Law Society awards honorary doctorates each year to distinguished individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice.

Ms. Loeb is a partner at Shibley Righton LLP in Toronto and co-leader of its Condominium Practice Group, which acts as legal counsel to both condominium corporations and condominium developers in Ontario.

Respectfully dubbed "the Condo Queen," Ms. Loeb is a lawyer, educator, author and consumer advocate. She is passionately committed to improving the experience of those buying and living in condominiums in Ontario.

She is the author of the two leading texts on condominium law, The Condominium Act: A User’s Manual, fifth edition (Thomson Reuters), and Condominium Law and Administration 2nd edition, as well as the booklet Condominium Ownership: What you need to know.

She has served as co-chair of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA), Real Property Subsection Condominium Committee and is a frequent lecturer for the OBA and the Law Society of Ontario.

Ms. Loeb has been a member of the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services Real Property Registration Committee, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program Consumer Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Council of Ontario and the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Condominium Institute.

As a member of the Ontario Residential Study Group, she made recommendations to the government that resulted in the 1978 Condominium Act, which first legislated consumer rights for Ontario condominium buyers and owners. She was also a member of an expert panel where she reviewed and advised the Ontario Government on proposed amendments to the Condominium Act, 1998 and the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015. She was also consulted on changes to the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act arising from the Cunningham Report.

She is a Professor Emeritus of Law at Metropolitan Toronto University (formerly Ryerson University), School of Business Management and has completed the Institute of Corporate Directors and the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management’s Financial Literacy Program for Directors and Executives and the Governance Essentials Program for Directors of Not-For-Profit Organizations.

Ms. Loeb is also a former member of the Board of Directors of Bridgepoint Health and of the Princess Margaret Hospital (now known as the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation). She is the founder of the “Weekend to End Women’s Cancers” which benefits the Foundation and since its inception 20 years ago has raised $180 million.
