The Executive Leadership Council

The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) is the preeminent membership organization committed to increasing the number of global Black executives in C-Suites, on corporate boards, and in global enterprises. The ELC opens channels of opportunity for the development of Black executives to positively impact business and our communities.

OVERVIEW

The mission of The ELC's Scholarship Programs is to build a pipeline of Black corporate talent by supporting the academic achievement and development of Black undergraduate and graduate students.

The ELC offers several undergraduate and graduate scholarships which are open to high-achieving Black students attending an accredited college or university in the United States. Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills, and a commitment to community service. In addition to receiving a scholarship award, selected recipients are invited to participate in The ELC’s Honors Symposium.

Each scholarship program has unique eligibility requirements that candidates must meet for consideration. To meet the general eligibility criteria for an ELC scholarship candidates must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Identify as Black, African American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, or other African descent
  • Enrolled in a U.S. accredited college or university
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Not be a dependent of an ELC member
  • Past scholarship recipients are ineligible to reapply for ELC Undergraduate Scholarships. However, past scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for ELC Graduate Scholarships.

Students who are currently enrolled in a community college or junior college and have been accepted to an accredited four-year college are eligible to apply for undergraduate scholarships.

Submission Requirements for Scholarships
  • Essay: Applicants must submit well-written responses to all essay components for the Essay Questions (4) and Corporate Essay Questions (1), if applicable, as outlined per scholarship. (Note - Corporate Essay Questions may differ for each scholarship program.)

Scholarship awardees will receive a two-year, need-based scholarship in the amount of $10,000 per year to assist with educational expenses for the upcoming academic year(s). Scholarship awardees will receive a two-year, need-based scholarship in the amount of $10,000 per year to assist with educational expenses for the upcoming academic year(s). Honors Symposium is a multi-day professional development experience comprising of a series of workshops and meetings that prepare ELC Scholars to contribute their talents in the workplace effectively. As a result of the ongoing public health crisis, the Honors Symposium will be conducted at a limited capacity from October 1-4, 2024, in Washington, D.C. Registration and travel details will follow soon, but for now here is what you can expect from the program:

  • A series of professional development seminars and keynote sessions featuring notable business and community leaders.
  • Networking opportunities with other ELC Scholars as well as ELC members, senior-level executives, and other prominent global Black business leaders.
  • Opportunities to attend powerful sessions facilitated by Black leaders via ELC's Institute for Leadership Development. These are “for us, by us” conversations about navigating the corporate world as Black leaders.

ELC Scholarship Application Form

OVERALL ELIGIBILITY

1. Are you currently enrolled in an accredited four-year college as an undergraduate student or a graduate program?
  • UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS: ELC Undergraduate Scholarships are available to applicants currently enrolled in an accredited four-year college. High school seniors and graduate students are not eligible to apply for undergraduate scholarships.
  • GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS: ELC Graduate Scholarships are available to incoming graduate students as of Fall 2024. Applicants not enrolled in a graduate program are still eligible to apply but must have admission into a graduate program for the Fall of 2024 by the time of the scholarship award notification in April 15, 2024.
2. Are you a U.S. Citizen?
  • ELC Scholarships are available to U.S citizens residing in and attending school in the U.S. International students and non-citizens are not eligible.
3. Are you Black, African American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, or other African descent?
  • ELC Scholarships are designed for students of African descent. One of the ELC’s missions is to increase the number of successful Black executives by granting opportunities that add value to their development, leadership, academic, and philanthropic endeavors. One way we accomplish this mission is by offering scholarships to students of the African American community.
4. Did you apply for need-based financial aid?
  • UNDERGRADUATE: If FAFSA declares an applicant eligible for aid, the applicant is eligible for ELC Scholarships. We want to ensure that scholarships are awarded to students who need it. All ELC Scholarships are need-based.
  • GRADUATE: Applicants applying for any graduate program funding or loans including federal student loans, private loans, and grants are eligible to apply for an ELC Scholarship.
5. Have you previously won an ELC Scholarship?
  • Past scholarship recipients are ineligible to reapply for ELC Undergraduate Scholarships.
  • However, past scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for ELC Graduate Scholarships.
6. Are you a dependent of an ELC Member?
  • If your parent or guardian is an existing member of the ELC, you are ineligible to apply for the ELC Scholarship Program.

  • We take every aspect of your application into consideration.
4. Do I have a better chance at winning the scholarship if I use the entire 300-word count for each essay question?
  • Applicants will be evaluated on readability, sentence structure, grammar, and content. 
5. If I applied in the past and did not receive a scholarship, can I apply again?
  • Yes, we strongly encourage you to try again as long as you still meet the eligibility criteria.
6. If transferring for the fall semester, do I list the current school or the school I am transferring to?
  • List the school you are enrolled in at the time of your application. If you are accepted by another accredited institution and plan to transfer by the fall semester, you must e-mail scholarships@elcinfo.com to update your application as soon as possible.

7. Am I ineligible if my recommender does not respond? Can I change my recommender if my first choice does not respond?
  • Yes, it is your responsibility as an applicant to ensure that your recommender submits the recommendation form on time. Applications without this requirement will be disqualified from the selection process. All recommendation forms are due two weeks past the deadline.
  • Yes, you can change your recommender prior to the application deadline.
8. Can I update my application post-submission?
  • Yes, if you need to update your application after submission, you must e-mail scholarships@elcinfo.com prior to the application deadline.

9. Can I withdraw my application?
  • Yes, you can withdraw your scholarship application by sending a request to scholarships@elcinfo.com

10. If I made a mistake in the eligibility form, can I withdraw my application, then restart?
  • If you made a mistake, please send an email to scholarships@elcinfo.com. Once you start an application with your email, you will not be able to start over.

11. Is classification defined by credit hours or graduation year?
  • Classification is determined by graduation year.
12. Does my major matter?
  • For certain scholarships, yes. For example, there are scholarships open to STEM majors only. Be sure to read each scholarship’s criteria.
13. Are ELC Scholarships only open to HBCU’s and state schools?
  • No. ELC Scholarships vary by institution type. The majority of awards offered accept applicants from any accredited college in the U.S. Be sure to read each scholarship’s criteria.

FINANCIAL AID

1. Do I have to apply for FAFSA to apply for ELC?
  • Yes, you have to apply for need-based financial aid. If you are ineligible for aid, you are ineligible for ELC scholarships.
2. What if there is a change to my FAFSA status after I have applied for a scholarship?
  • If there is a change to your FAFSA status, send an email to scholarships@elcinfo.com prior to the application deadline.

3. When will the money be awarded by?
  • Scholarship award distribution will be administered 2-6 weeks before the start of your Fall and Spring semesters.

HONORS SYMPOSIUM

1. What is Honors Symposium?
  • Honors Symposium is a multi-day professional development experience comprising of a series of workshops and meetings that prepare ELC Scholars to contribute their talents in the workplace effectively. This experience takes place virtually and in person in Washington D.C.
2. Do I have to attend Honors Symposium?
  • No, Honors Symposium is a benefit of accepting the ELC Scholarship. You are strongly encouraged to attend for professional development and access to exclusive networking events with corporate sponsors and ELC members.

CORPORATE SPONSORS

1. Will I get to network with my scholarship sponsor?
  • All Scholars are invited to network with sponsors throughout Honors Symposium.
2. Am I guaranteed an internship and/or employment with my corporate sponsor?
  • No, not all scholarships guarantee placement for an internship and/or employment. 

How to Apply

1. Register

Click on the Register button to complete and submit the registration form.

2. Login

Login to the Scholarship system with your email and password.

3. Create

Create your online Application. Review and accept the eligibility requirements.

4. Save

Before the application deadline, your application can be saved as DRAFT until all the required information is completed. As each section is complete, you will see a appear in the category tab when the application is saved. Please ensure that all attachments are in Acrobat PDF format. At any time, you can download and print your application by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section.

5. Submit

On completion, save your Application as FINAL. Download and print a copy of your application for your records by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section in the right column. Note: If an update is required prior to the Call for Application close, you can make the update and resave as FINAL.
