🌞 Weekend Food for Thought Did you know? It's taken an average of #25years for countries to move from 20% to 80% access to #electricity. Fast forward to today, and increased consumption and industrialization have led global CO2 emissions to surge six-fold since 1950, reshaping the landscape of our planet's climate. In the 1950s, the United States and countries later forming the European Union (EU) dominated the global emissions landscape, accounting for over 70% of total annual emissions. However, the tides quickly turned as emerging economies entered the picture. China's economic ascent in the 1970s spurred a surge in CO2 output. From 1950 to 2000, China's emissions skyrocketed by over 4,500%, reaching 3.6 billion tonnes annually by 2000. Similarly, India, Japan, and the broader Asian region experienced exponential emission growth during this period, each witnessing a surge exceeding 1,000%. With great power and resources, however, also comes great responsibility. The next #globalchallenge is to achieve a 100% #clean electricity system (defined as zero net greenhouse gas emissions) by 2035, putting us on a path to economy-wide #netzero emissions by 2050. The experts agree that the roadmap to net zero is electrification, renewable generation, and using green hydrogen for hard-to-electrify scenarios. So, how is Canadian Solar Inc. contributing? Our Solar + Storage Strategy: 🔆In the last 24 years, the price of PV modules has decreased by over 97%, from $5/W to $0.15/W. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of PV solar has plummeted by 85%, and is now the lowest-cost technology to generate electricity in most jurisdictions. 🔆Technology development doesn't just reduce costs—it also decreases the energy consumption in producing PV equipment and installing PV systems. Higher cell efficiency and better manufacturing processes mean less materials and energy required for per-watt module production. Plus, higher output per module means less materials and energy needed to install a solar system of a certain power output. 🔆The energy payback of PV equipment has been reduced from over 3 years in 2000 to about 1 year now, making PV itself even greener. And finally, solar power plants generate electricity for an average of 3-6 hours per day. 🔆Coupled with #energystorage of the same duration, a solar + storage system can supply 100% controllable #greenelectricity at the same #cost as coal or gas-fired power generation. Canadian Solar Inc. was founded on a dream: to power the world with green energy. We're excited to see this dream come true!
