Our commitment to delivering high-quality and secure satellite communications is crucial in meeting the evolving needs of modern Defense strategies. That’s why we were excited to participate in the 2024 Indian DefSpace Symposium, organized by the ISpA- Indian Space Association. Viasat India Managing Director, Gautam Sharma, led a session on “Enabling secure, reliable, and seamless communication & PNT to support battlespace requirements.” The symposium was an incredible opportunity to discuss advancements, share insights, and explore the future of Defense communications technology. Engaging with the Indian industry leaders, policymakers, and defense experts was truly enriching as we continue to connect the world's most challenging missions. #defspace2024 #isro #inspace #nsil #dot #bsnl #india #indianarmedforces

We are thrilled to announce the winner of our Viasat Beyond: Space UK STEM innovation competition – 16-year-old Ash Goldsmith from Merseyside! 👏🎉 His concept of a ‘housekeeping’ satellite that would launch into space before repairing, refueling or upgrading satellites and safely returning home, wowed judges The Royal Institution Director Katherine Mathieson, space influencer Camille Elizabeth Bergin, aka ‘The Galactic Gal’, Viasat’s VP of Space Systems Mark Dickinson, Delivery Director of the UK Ministry of Defence’s Skynet satellite system Steven Fisher, and Ray Fielding, Head of Space Sustainability at the UK Space Agency. VB:S invited Years 12 and 13 in the UK to submit their ideas for space sustainability. From over 1,200 entries, just five were invited to pitch their ideas to an esteemed panel of judges at our London HQ this week. All five finalists will also be invited to an all-expenses-paid trip to Viasat’s Sustainable Space Experience Week at our London office in July 2024. It's safe to say that not only were our minds blown away by the Viasat Beyond: Space presentations we watched today, but so were the judges! 🤩 Five of the brightest young 16-17-year-olds presented their ideas on space sustainability. What was particularly striking was not just their enthusiasm and creative solutions, but also the prevailing lack of knowledge about this problem, as all the finalists emphasized the urgency of raising global awareness before it becomes too late. 🛰️🚀 Huge thanks to our judges Ray Fielding (UK Space Agency), Katherine Mathieson (The Royal Institution), Steven Fisher (UK Ministry of Defence), Camille Elizabeth Bergin (The Galactic Gal) and Mark Dickinson (Viasat). And bravo to our VB:S finalists Krish, Mesha, Isabella, Ash and Amar. It’s going to be a tough decision but we will be announcing our winner tomorrow, so stay tuned! 👀 #viasatbeyondspace #stem #uk #ukstem #spacesustainability #satellites

Today is the big day when five exceptionally talented students aged 16-17 years of age pitch their ideas for space sustainability to our space expert judges in our Viasat Beyond: Space UK STEM innovation competition. Our finalists: 🛰️ Isabella lives in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Her submission promotes sustainability in space by collecting and storing existing space junk and preventing new junk from entering orbit. These ideas encompass technical, design, and policy aspects. 🛰️ Ash from Liverpool was inspired to come up with a solution to prolong the lifespan of satellites in orbit, by utilizing a housekeeping satellite that could repair and upgrade existing satellites instead of simply retrieving them. 🛰️ Mesha from Lincolnshire was inspired to conceptualize a CFFD (Collector, Fixer, Factory & Deliverer) that provides a holistic solution to handle space debris. 🛰️ Krish is from London and his idea includes a combination of technical design and policy elements to combat the increasingly detrimental impacts of light pollution reflected from spacecraft. 🛰️ Amar from Wolverhampton had the idea to utilize EM-wave transmitters for collision avoidance, nanotechnology to repair the satellite, and MPD thrusters to reduce the environmental impact. Stayed tuned for details of the winner - over to the judges Ray Fielding, UK Space Agency | Katherine Mathieson, The Royal Institution | Camille Elizabeth Bergin, The Galactic Gal | Steven Fisher, SKYNET 6, UK Ministry of Defence | Mark Dickinson, VP Space Segment, Viasat.
