Press Kit: Income, Poverty and Health Insurance and Supplemental Poverty Measure

Annual release of national-level income, poverty and health insurance coverage statistics. The reports will include statistics for calendar year 2017 and compare trends with previous years.

"Over the last 3 years, median earnings for all male workers increased by 5.4 percent and for all female workers, it increased 7.4 percent. However, there is not a trend in either male or female earnings, as neither has seen consistent year-to-year increases. The changes are statistically different between genders."

"In 2017, the official national poverty rate was 12.3 percent. This reflects a decline of 0.4 percentage points from 2016. This is the third consecutive decline in the national poverty rate, and since 2014, the national poverty rate has declined 2.5 percentage points."

"The only population to have experienced an increase in poverty rates from 2016 to 2017 were individuals with at least a bachelor’s degree. This population saw an increase in poverty from 2016 to 2017, although they’ve remained among the lowest poverty rates by educational attainment."

"The supplemental poverty measure, unlike the official poverty measure, includes the value of non-cash benefits. Non-cash benefits can be received in the form of actual in-kind benefits, or they could be reductions in the cost of items that they’ve purchased."
