Vienna, Virginia (February 7, 2019) – Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts has announced the first performances of Summer 2019, including a diverse range of classical programming, ranging from opera and orchestral music, to films with live orchestra and dance performances at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and at The Barns at Wolf Trap. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 23; Wolf Trap members (donors of $80 and up) have access to presales and are beginning to purchase tickets now. This season’s offerings are a uniquely wonderful Wolf Trap experience and continue our tradition of welcoming patrons of all ages to experience the full spectrum of the performing arts.”

Wolf Trap Opera’s season features new productions, company premieres, cross-disciplinary partnerships across the region, and a roster of some of opera’s most promising young artists. The schedule includes four fully staged productions.

The WTO opens on June 22 with The World Turned Upside Down—a double bill of staged operas at The Barns featuring Gluck’s Merlin’s Island and Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis with additional performances on June 26, 28 and 30. Also at The Barns, WTO will produce Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos on July 19, 21, 24 and 27. At the Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, WTO takes the stage on August 9 for one night only with Rossini’s, The Barber of Seville. First performed in 1816, Rossini's comedic opera has become one of the most beloved operas of all time.

The Wolf Trap Opera season also includes the highly popular annual recital with Steven Blier of the New York Festival of Song. This year’s concerts on June 1 and 2 celebrate his 25^th anniversary of performing with WTO’s emerging artists. The crowd-pleasing Aria Jukebox, where the audience votes on the pieces to be performed, will be held on July 28 at The Barns.

Wolf Trap Opera continues its UNTRAPPED initiative with two collaborations with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. On June 1, NOI+F and WTO will present Porgy and Bess: A Concert of Songs featuring the brilliant music of George Gershwin performed by soprano Alyson Cambridge and baritone Joshua Conyers, under the direction of conductor John Morris Russell. Ravel’s master work, L’heure espagnole, will be performed in an expanded concert staging on June 22. WTO singers will return to The Phillips Collection for Vocal Colors, marrying live music with works of art on June 13 and July 11.

The National Symphony Orchestra, Wolf Trap’s longest artistic partner, will feature Music Director Gianandrea Noseda making his Wolf Trap debut on July 26 conducting a program of Tchaikovsky & Beethoven with violinist Ning Feng. Perfect for nights under the stars, Wolf Trap’s popular film series continues with two nights of the fourth installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™ in Concert on July 5 and 6, plus Disney in Concert: Coco on July 27, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in Concert on August 2.  In addition, Wolf Trap and the NSO welcome: Nas on July 14, “Weird Al” Yankovic on July 16, Sarah McLachlan on August 3 and Jennifer Hudson on September 5.

Making a rare U. S. appearance, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, celebrating their 140^th anniversary, performs on August 14 under the baton of Music Director Long Yu with cellist Alisa Weilerstein. The evening’s repertoire will include Qigang Chen’s Wu Xing (The Five Elements), Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, and Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.
Dance programming brings two very different companies to the Filene Center stage. The American Ballet Theatre returns July 11 through 13 with the romantic fable of Swan Lake, featuring choreography by Kevin McKenzie after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with the role of Odette/Odile being performed by principal ballerinas Misty Copeland, Hee Seo, and Devon Teuscher. On June 12, Caracalla Dance Theatre, the internationally-acclaimed leading dance company from Lebanon, takes to the stage. Founded by Abdel-Halim Caracalla, this Lebanese-based dance company makes its Wolf Trap debut with an evening that includes One Thousand and One Nights, a retelling of the classic tale of Scheherazade.

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, produces and presents a full range of performance and education programs in the greater Washington area, as well as nationally.
