Description

The opioid epidemic has been declared a national emergency that resulted in 75% of the 64,000 overdose deaths last year alone. The church must be meaningfully involved in response, working collaboratively with other resources and institutions within the community. The morning session of this preconference will consider substance abuse and addiction generally, and then specifically focus on opioid addiction, treatment and recovery from it, and how the body of Christ can effectively respond as lay, pastoral, and mental health care providers. Additionally, the afternoon session will focus on developing strategic collaborative relationships between churches and the communities in which they live.

The afternoon panel will include mental health experts from clinical, government, and non-profit backgrounds. It will be moderated by Dr. David Jenkins, Professor of Counseling and Director of the MA in Addiction Counseling program in the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies at Liberty University.
