Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen has been nominated for a federal court seat by President Donald Trump.

The New York Times first reported Sunday that Trump would announce Larsen's nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati Monday. The Trump administration has since confirmed the nomination.

Larsen, who was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court in September 2015 to fill the vacancy left by former Justice Mary Beth Kelly, was on the short list Trump released during his campaign for U.S. Supreme Court nominations.

Before taking up her current post, Larsen served on the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School, according to her Supreme Court biography.

She also served as deputy assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel, and clerked for David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and for former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a statement, Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Stephen Markman said Larsen brought "a lifetime dedicated to legal scholarship, regard for our Constitution and abiding respect for the rule of law."

"While today's nomination by the President is a well-deserved recognition of these attributes, Joan nonetheless will be missed by her colleagues who have very much enjoyed working with her on behalf of the people of Michigan," he said. "We plan to take full advantage of her judicial insights and contributions until she is finally confirmed by the United States Senate."
