Sustainability

Hawthorn and its owner, Centennial, have been responsible stewards of the environment in the Vernon Hills area. We are committed to providing customers, business owners and employees with an exceptional experience, while incorporating environmentally sustainable operating practices and energy-efficiency measures at our property. Ways Hawthorn has safeguarded the environment over the past year include:

  • Recycling 128 tons of cardboard; the equivalent of saving 2,173 mature trees, conserving 76,686 kilowatt hours of energy, saving 51,124 gallons of oil, and reducing 1,022 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Diverting 10.5% of waste generated by the shopping center from landfills, saving 4,260 yd  of landfill space.

  • Decreasing the center’s annual electrical consumption year-over-year in 2022 by 6.8%.

    • Hawthorn has continued to partner with SWALCO for the Re-Use-A-Shoe and Textile Recycling Program. Hawthorn has generated thousands of pounds of donations for shoes and textiles that will stay out of landfills.

    • Hawthorn continues to partner with District 73 for the Crayon Initiative. These crayons are then sent to The Crayon Initiative to be melted down and re-made for donation to Children's Hospitals. So far, we’ve collected over 600 pounds of crayons for donation.

    • Hawthorn introduced a book drive with Bernie’s Book Bank and collected 1k gently used books for children in need.

    • Hawthorn continues the upkeep of our live GREEN wall. A live plant wall complete with low energy grow lights and fencing made from unwanted pallets.

  • Hawthorn diverted 75% of waste, supporting an environmentally friendly demolition of the former Carson’s.

  • Providing 93,700 clean driving miles, saving 49,654 pounds of CO2, and offsetting 2,190 gallons of gasoline; equivalent to 322 trees planted through complimentary electric vehicle (EV) charging amenities.

The public can learn more about Hawthorn’s sustainability efforts through its SEE Centennial initiative, a program built on the three cornerstones of Sustainability, Efficiency and the Environment. At Hawthorn, environmental stewardship is an important part of creating a sustainable future and another way the center supports its commitment to the community of Vernon Hills on Earth Day and every day in between.
