AFP-PA Urges Action on “Clean Slate” Bill Before Summer Recess

Jun 18, 2018 by AFP

Harrisburg, Pa. – Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) today urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to act on legislation that would help Pennsylvanians charged with low-level, nonviolent crimes to obtain jobs and productively re-enter their communities once they have served their sentence. House Bill 1419, often referred to as the “Clean Slate” bill, would provide for the automatic sealing of criminal records for misdemeanors and charges not leading to convictions.

AFP-PA State Director Beth Anne Mumford issued the following statement:

“The Senate should act on this legislation with the urgency it deserves. Pennsylvania should be a place where people who deserve second chances, get them. Too few people in our state charged with low-level, nonviolent crimes get a fair shot at putting their lives back together after paying their debt to society.”

Background:

The House passed HB 1419, introduced by State Rep. Sheryl Dozier and championed by State Rep. Jordan Harris, in April of this year. The Senate unanimously passed Sen. Scott Wagner’s companion bill (SB 529) in 2017.

Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania will join a coalition of organizations on Monday, June 18, to rally in support of the “clean slate” legislation.

Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania in March sent a letter of support for HB 1419, urging members on the House Judiciary Committee to support the bill. The grassroots organization has, and will continue to, mount a digital campaign in support of the legislation.
