AFP: A West Virginia Who’s Who Urges Manchin to Support Kavanaugh before Monday Meeting

Jul 26, 2018 by AFP

CHARLESTON, W.Va.— Americans for Prosperity-West Virginia (AFP-WV) and an influential coalition of lawmakers and organizations on Thursday sent a letter to Senator Joe Manchin urging him to support President Trump’s nominee to the United States Supreme Court, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The letter signers represent a who’s who of West Virginian policy leaders on the federal and state level, including U.S. Representatives David McKinley, Evan Jenkins, and Alex Mooney. Sen. Manchin is scheduled to meet with Judge Kavanaugh on Monday.

In the letter, the signers support Sen. Manchin’s decision to break with his “partisan leaders in the Senate by agreeing to meet with Judge Kavanaugh,” but considered “any effort to obstruct this highly qualified nominee from being confirmed as a threat to deny West Virginians, and every American, an exemplary jurist in the mold of Justice Neil Gorsuch…”

AFP-WV State Direction Jason Huffman issued the following statement:

“Though it should have been a forgone conclusion, our activists are pleased that Sen. Manchin broke with his partisan leadership in deciding to meet with Judge Kavanaugh. We encourage him to use this opportunity to rise above politics as usual and focus on safeguarding West Virginian’s constitutional rights instead. The Mountain State is in clear support of Trump’s nominee and we’re hopeful that after his meeting Sen. Manchin will recognize that Kavanaugh was his guy all along. Sen. Manchin should prioritize the fundamental principles that are important to the majority of West Virginians: will Judge Kavanaugh defend the Constitution, interpret the law as written, and not legislate from the bench? We encourage Sen. Manchin to stay away from the obstructionist tactics of his DC bosses by doing the right thing and support Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.”

Since announcing a seven-figure commitment to paid advertising and grassroots engagement in support of Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation, AFP has made 95,000 calls in West Virginia alone.

Last week the Judicial Crisis Network released polling indicating that a majority of West Virginia voters support the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh.
