"One of the most important works of art yet to emerge from the era of Black Lives Matter." —The New York Times

Julia Bullock inhabits the body of a reimagined Joséphine Baker on the steps of The Met's Great Hall in this darker, more intimate consideration of the life and legacy of the famous singer, activist, and cultural icon. With text by poet Claudia Rankine and score created by Tyshawn Sorey (both MacArthur Fellows), Perle Noire—"black pearl"—was conceived in collaboration with groundbreaking theater director Peter Sellars, and is performed with Sorey and the new music collective International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).

Also on Thursday, January 17.

Tickets include same-day Museum admission during open hours.

This residency is made possible by the Chester Dale Fund and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Perle Noire: Meditations for Joséphine is made possible in part by Lavori Sterling Foundation, Inc.

ICE would like to thank Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, lead supporters of ICE's First Page commissioning program, which helped fund the creation of Perle Noire: Meditations for Joséphine.
