Julia Bullock inhabits the body of a reimagined Joséphine Baker on the steps of The Met's Great Hall in this darker, more intimate consideration of the life and legacy of the famous singer, activist, and cultural icon. With text by poet Claudia Rankine and score created by Tyshawn Sorey (both MacArthur Fellows), Perle Noire—"black pearl"—was conceived in collaboration with groundbreaking theater director Peter Sellars, and is performed with Sorey and the new music collective International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).
