Arlington, VA – Today the Senate voted to approve Kevin Newsom to serve on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. As one of President Trump’s nominees for the lower court, Newsom will now serve his lifetime appointment to the nation’s second-highest court. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Newsom served as Alabama’s Solicitor General for five years and worked as a clerk under former U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter.
Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) Executive Director Mark Lucas issued the following statement:
“We’re pleased to see Congress confirm someone with such an outstanding legal background and steadfast commitment to the Constitution. Newsom’s confirmation represents another step toward getting the lower courts back to protecting liberty and another step away from legislating from the bench. With over one hundred vacancies remaining, our activists stand ready to mobilize in support of other qualified nominees if needed.”
The US Court of Appeals and US District Courts have nearly 130 vacancies to fill. Each year, the lower courts consider over 360,000 cases.
CVA engaged in a historic grassroots effort in support of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. The group’s efforts included its base of veterans, military families, and citizen activists making over 350,000 emails and phone calls urging Americans to contact their senators in support of his confirmation.
CVA’s efforts were successful in West Virginia, North Dakota, and Indiana where Senators Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Donnelly voted to confirm Gorsuch.
